Shortly after 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, Assistant Metropolitan Police Chief Carlos Heraud said that officers rushed to the 200 block of M Street SW when they heard gunshots ring out.
Upon arrival, two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds, one of whom - later identified as Matthew Miller, 32 - was pronounced dead at the scene and another who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
While still investigating the fatality, Heraud said that three others arrived at local hospitals suffering from injuries also believed to be tied to the M Street SW shooting. A sixth suffered undisclosed injuries after falling from the building.
On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police Department announced that Keshawn Lavender, 22, Deandre Sams, 27, Raymond Mathis, 36, all of Southeast DC, have been identified as possible shooters and they were arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed.
“I am grateful for the hard work and professionalism of our First District Patrol Officers and Homicide Detectives to quickly conduct a thorough investigation leading to the arrest of the suspects,” acting MPD Chief Pamela Smith said today.
“The Metropolitan Police Department is working around the clock to protect this city and because of their dedication on this case, we were able to make numerous homicide arrests less than 12 hours later.”
